Update It has been a while since I have been on the blog scene. I am sorry for not being as “on it”. I am still learning how to be active on line without it being my whole day. Nourishing Herbs and Foods Community Gardens Project, is our new project with Herbalist without Borders (HWB) that I have been blessed to coordinate. Background For those of you who are unfamiliar, HWB is a nonprofit community organization whose vision is that all people have access to affordable natural botanical medicine. They do this by creating educational, clinical, advocacy and grassroots model projects to fill gaps in health and social justice internationally. Last year I started to collaborate on a Northern California Chapter, and with my relocation things got put on hold. Though this chapter is still open and ready to move forward, we are seeking for more volunteers to make this happen! With this leisured down time, Gigi Stafne Director of HWB, suggested I start a Project that can reach out to our global community. Thus the Nourishing Herbs and Foods Community Gardens Project (NHF) was born. Nourishing Herbs and Foods There may be many community gardens out there that are growing herbs but my current findings on the web show there are not many who truly incorporate herbs in their gardens (or at least talk about it online). NHF is taking community gardens to the next step. We are creating a simpler’s guide to gardening with these wild tonics that have been used by the common people for many generations. This is a vision: a community growing herbs right alongside the vegetable and fruit companions. They come together to learn and teach future generations how to use these botanicals in their meals, and as first aid responders. Every house hold has access to organic locally produced herbs, fruits, vegetables and mushrooms and they have the ability to craft their botanical medicines for the year. A way we (HWB) can help this manifest is by creating a Resource Kit for starting up a NHF community garden that is projected to be compiled by January 2015. Also, we are reaching out to community gardens that are already up and running and asking for them to share with us their empirical wisdom that we will share with our members and fans. Every month we will feature a new garden on our website. If you are a CSA and have a community garden plot, we would love to hear from you too! http://herbalistswithoutborders.weebly.com/community-herb-gardens-project.html As I walked through the Arcata Community Forest yesterday, I was greeted by Redwood Violets, Viola sempervirens. These delicate yellow flowers stood out in the forest of green and shared their story with me. Redwood violet’s flowers grow on a separate stalk from their heart shaped leaves. This flower shared that she helps us listen to our hearts. She helps us open ourselves with confidence, with an awareness that we have support from the “whole”, just like she does (seemingly standing on her own). She says that the forest works together both above and beneath the surface. If you are in need of support, if you are not feeling your personal power sit with violets and let her guide you. |
Greetings My name is Gabrielle. I am enchanted with our Mother Earth. Plants lure me in,as the insects buzz by and birds dance in the sky. Categories
